The training ship Georg Stage was built in 1934 at Frederikshavn Shipyard and floating dock.

The training ship belongs to the independent institution The Georg Stage Memorial Foundation, whose aim is: ‘To give young people wishing to go to sea, their first lesson in practical seamanship aboard a purpose-built training ship’. The training ship Georg Stage is run in accordance with this policy to this very day.

In 1882 the foundation was started by the ship-owner, Frederik Stage, and his wife Thea, in memory of their son, Georg, who died of tuberculosis at the age of 22 in 1880.

The first ship sailing under this name was a slightly smaller fully rigged vessel from 1882. The original figurehead portraying the young Georg Stage was transferred from the old ship to the present one. 20 sails decorate the masts on the ship.

An education at Georg Stage qualifies to accept employment as a seaman. The students' education is a basic education. Former students have found jobs both in the offshore and maritime industries.

Since 1956 “Georg Stage” has participated in the Tall Ships Races on a regular basis, and has placed well several times. In 2013 the ship won 3rd place.
