Esprit is a cold-moulded wooden boat with a modern schooner rig. Cold-moulding is a composite method of wooden boat building that uses 2 or more layers of thin wood, called veneers, oriented in different directions, resulting in a strong structure, similar to a fibreglass hull but substantially lighter.

In 1997 she won the friendship trophy in the Tall Ships Races for her work promoting international understanding sailing with 50:50 German and English crew. Esprit is the only German boat to win this title.
