What is it like to sail as a trainee in The Tall Ships Races?
We asked some of the 150 local trainees who sailed from Sunderland to Esbjerg during The Tall Ships Races 2018 about their experiences at sea and, not least, what they got out of the trip.
We can reveal that it has been an unforgettable experience for many of them.

It was the best experience I ever had.

I learned that there was no need to fear taking the initiative, because I can do it after all.

What was your most fun moment on board?
I met a cool Spanish guy who did magic tricks with the ropes we used to tie knots. Everyone sat on deck and had fun.

I can’t really choose a “most fun” moment. The entire voyage was amazing. The best thing was getting away from everyday life with some really cool trainees.

There are so many to choose from, but my favourite was the last night shift of the voyage because my team and I sang songs all night.
